REFLECTION
In my opinion, the unit had a positive balance for the students and for me as educator. As I stated previously, the science and language were accomplished by most of the students and that was my goal for the unit. The students are used to work by using cooperative learning strategies and I used them often because they are very effective. I know students need individual assessments and those were also included in the unit, but we all learn from each other and to share knowledge also creates this teamwork atmosphere that benefits
the social-emotional skills of the students. The KWL prior knowledge assessment and the read aloud of related books are also activities that are familiar to student’s daily practice. They know how they work and what I expect from them, which makes the acquisition and sharing of the content easier. I also used a lot of visual clues and Total Physical Response to support meaning and understanding of the science and language vocabulary. All of my students are English as Second Language learners and although many of them are fluent in oral language they struggle in reading and writing. I often use TPR and visual clues in other subjects taught in English and the results have always been very positive.
