INTERVIEW SUMMARY
The questions that I used are as follows:
1. What are the academic standards? What is the role in the curriculum?
2. What is the curriculum?
3. How is the curriculum administrated in schools?
4. How should the curriculum be administered in schools?
5. What is the role of the government, school board, principal, teacher, student,
parents and community members’ in the curriculum?
6. What is assessment?
I conducted this interview to the best of my knowledge in accordance with the
standards stated in the Belmont Principles of Beneficence required by the IRB
when working with human subjects.
Mr. Kalenji is a dean at one of the elementary schools of my district and has a
deep knowledge of the curriculum we are using actually in our district. The
interview took place at Fall 2012 and you will find as follows a summary of the
responses. Mr. Kalenji’s expertise responses gave me a clear review of the
different components of the curriculum as he covers in his responses all the
information that needs to be taken into consideration when we work with a
curriculum. He likes the curriculum we are using at the district but he is also
expecting a big change if a national curriculum is adopted.
The academic standards are the expectations that the state has for students within
the district. The curriculum is supposed to be a guide for learning when it is couple with the standards it is suppose to assure that the students will achieve at grade level.
It is also what the district itself decides what will be taught with the goal that
this is going to help the students meet the standards set by the state. The
curriculum is administrated in our school through district programs such as
Reader’s/Writer’s Workshop.
The curriculum should be administered in schools through frameworks set by teachers in the district. Teachers should play a role in choosing the curriculum for
the students they teach. Since we are made to analyze the needs of the students and differentiate instruction it would help if we could choose programs that achieve both of those needs.
The role of the government, school board, principal, teacher, student, parents and
community members’ in the curriculum is to assure that they are working together
to meet the needs of the children and that the curriculum again can achieve those goals. If it cannot, they can work together to find solutions to ensure that requirements for all the students are met. Assessment is a tool that teachers use to place students. It is also a way for teachers to measure progress and a way in which they can adjust the curriculum to better serve their students. The role of the assessment in the curriculum is to ensure that teachers are giving students what the state mandates students should
learn. Eventually the national curriculum will broaden those expectations
and change the way that students are being taught.
